These are resources from Shelly Fryer's June 2026 "Rocket Engineering Lab" summer camps. These were offered June 22-26 through Summer at Providence Day School in Charlotte, North Carolina.
The Summer Rocket Lab is a week-long adventure into the exciting world of rocketry and space exploration. Designed for young minds eager to learn and create, the camp offers two age-specific sessions tailored to 2nd and 3rd graders, as well as incoming 4th and 5th graders. Through hands-on activities, engaging lessons, and creative projects, participants will discover the principles of rocket science, explore the history of the U.S. space program, and ignite their curiosity about the universe.
This session introduces young learners to the fundamentals of rockets and space exploration in a fun and creative environment. Kids will engage in age-appropriate experiments and projects while learning about the forces that make rockets fly. They’ll also hear stories about the pioneers of the U.S. space program and how their work paved the way for today's space adventures.
In this hands-on rocket camp, students will design and build a variety of rockets to explore the principles of flight and propulsion. They’ll create balloon rockets powered by air, straw rockets to learn about aerodynamics, Alka-Seltzer rockets fueled by a chemical reaction, and paper tube rockets launched with a stomp launcher. These engaging projects inspire creativity and introduce young learners to the exciting world of rocketry!
This session dives deeper into the science and engineering of rocketry. Older participants will build and launch model rockets, learn about aerodynamics and flight mechanics, and analyze data to improve designs. They’ll also explore the history of the U.S. space program, from the Apollo missions to modern-day space exploration efforts.
In this advanced rocketry lab, students will build and launch various types of rockets, including water bottle rockets and foam rockets. They’ll learn about aerodynamics and flight mechanics as they design rockets for maximum altitude and stability. Campers will also explore the history of the U.S. space program while testing and refining their designs based on real flight data. These hands-on activities will deepen their understanding of rocketry and space exploration.
